Meet the social entrepreneur channeling her passion through sport & social business
When you walk away from a conversation with Adele, it is likely that you will be dreaming of the solutions you want to design that tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems. What is special about Adele, though, is that she is a true reminder of how possible it is to turn those dreams into reality.
Designing Uplifting Communities
“At the end of the day, it’s not about sports at all. It is about creating a space that gives girls the confidence and power to believe in themselves and in their bodies.”
Early on, Adele recognized a need for a holistic approach to building the confidence of young girls. In doing this, she has created many different safe spaces for girls and women of all ages. She realized that by the age of 12, it was already too late, girls already lacked confidence. To solve this problem, Adele created ActivateHer with the mission of empowering under-served girls through sport to become agents of change within their communities, and fulfill their potential as young women and global citizens.
Adele is creating a similar community for adult women through Her Active, her soon to launch activewear line. At Her Active women are employed through a sewing co-op where they learn how to sew and become entrepreneurs.
Challenging the Status-Quo of Traditional Charity Models
“As a world, we have to work together to demand better from businesses”
Like many of the world’s most successful social entrepreneurs, Adele is not content with using the traditional charity model to tackle gender inequality, female health, and youth unemployment. Instead, she decided to launch a social business: Her Active, a sustainable activewear line that invests profits into ActivateHer. Through Her Active, Adele is also providing a solution to fast fashion by using sustainably sourced fabrics and creating jobs for women.
Adele is committed to ensuring that ActivateHer is best equipped to serve girls and women in their local community. If the needs of that community don’t align perfectly with what a donor is looking to do, being supported by a social business (Her Active), gives Adele the flexibility to be able to work without the donor and ensure that all of the needs of the community are continuously being met.
Providing Skills Necessary to Succeed
“We need to create platforms that empower young women’s transition to formalized employment or higher education”
Adele recognizes that in South Africa, likely due to the astronomically high youth unemployment rate, there is a “major gap in soft skills of how to be professional, soft skills that aren’t being modeled in their community.” To combat this, she is using ActivateHer and Her Active to give young people opportunities that prepare them for success. She sees these communities that she has built as stepping stones to help girls and young women transition from being unemployed to employable. Whether that be giving them their first job, providing skills training, or serving as a shining reference on their CV; Adele utilizes her social businesses to prepare, uplift, and empower the girls and women in her community.
“It just gives me so much energy to dream big.”
The energy and ambition that Adele exemplifies is contagious. Whether it is designing a sustainable activewear line (Her Active) with the intent to compete with major brands like Nike and Adidas, or spreading the ActivateHer curriculum to build uplifting communities for girls and women across the globe, there is no problem that can make her shy away.
Energized by all of these dreams, there is a lot that we can learn from Adele.
